It began in the early 1880s and to this day continues to build on this rich history while holding tight to the smalltown feel.
Bowie is home to the World’s Largest Jim Bowie Knife – the official knife of the State of Texas – and the second-largest Second Monday Trade Days event in Texas. We are located just 60 miles northwest of the DFW. Always remember as is etched on the Bowie knife, “Attitude is everything when it comes to where you are, where you want to be, and how you are going to get there.”

In 1998, the residents of Bowie approved a one-half of one percent sales tax dedicated to promoting economic development in the City of Bowie. These funds must be expended in accordance with State Law to facilitate eligible projects. The responsibility of the Bowie Economic Development Corporation is to reinvest the funds in Bowie, to expand the city property tax base, and create quality (primary) job opportunities.
Interested companies are required to complete an incentive proposal that requires a business plan and/or model, financial statements for three years, and a third-party economic impact study to determine the projected economic impact the business will have on the City of Bowie.
WORLD'S LARGEST BOWIE KNIFE
What is the old saying about Texas? “Everything is bigger in Texas!”. This saying now includes a particular type of knife, known as the Bowie Knife. The idea of the ‘Bowie Knife Monument’ was pitched to the Bowie Chamber of Commerce by the late Bob Hadley, local rancher and bronze sculptor. Chamber Board Members Bryan Brown and Van Baize championed the project. The late Bob Brashear, a patriarch of one of the pioneering families of Bowie, became a major contributor to the project citing that he wanted to honor his parents, Marvin & Bess Brashear. Marvin was also known as “Mr. Second Monday” as he helped develop Bowie’s Second Monday Trade Days. The donated funds to the Bowie Knife Project and purchasing of engraved tiles and benches helped build the World’s Largest Bowie Knife.
Measuring an astounding 20 feet long. The blade itself is 14 feet 5 inches in length and made purely from steel and the handle of Bois d’Arc wood. This spectacular sight weighs 3,000 pounds, good luck fitting this in your pocket. It has also withstood 95 mph tornadic winds. We appreciate the help from the City of Bowie Park Department and Community Development Board for helping landscape the Knife grounds and keep Pelham Park beautiful. Bowie Knife was unveiled on April 4, 2016. Governor Abbott signed Texas Senate Concurrent Resolution 7 on May 30, 2021, officially naming the Bowie Knife the Official Knife of the State of Texas. The resolution was sponsored by Senator Drew Springer and State Rep. David Spiller.
In April 2021 with the help of Bowie Community Development and Silver Bullet Web Solutions, we added the digital guestbook QR code. It has been scanned thousands of times by folks from everywhere such as Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Brazil, and Japan to as close as Wichita Falls, Dallas, to New York and Chicago.
